The Rudge Whitworth cup - Goodwood Revival 2023
Four 30-98s competed in the Rudge Whitworth cup* at the Goodwood Revival. A Le Mans style start, and a driver change, added excitement
and atmosphere to the event. Amongst an illustrious grid, crowded with Bentleys and Bugattis, the 30-98s acquitted themselves extremely well. The competing cars were: OE84, OE152, ROE3 & ROE22. You can find a full video of the race here. * The Rudge-Whitworth Cup was awarded to the aggregate winner of the 1923, '24 and '25 Le Mans 24 Hours races. |

OE229 travelled to Sicily
Mark Brett commented: To be fair, we had two breakdowns. The gear lever snapped at an old poor repair but we drove it 80km on Sicilian country roads near Noto in top gear using the advance / retard lever instead of slipping the clutch. Then the pipe to the oil pressure gauge cracked in Genoa but was easily soldered up in the morning.
The prize for worst pot-holed roads? Shared between Sicily’s poor, deserted, mountainous centre and Surrey’s wealthy, busy and leafy lanes. No surprises there then. Oh, and one anxious moment – reversing three abreast down the ramp off the ferry to Palermo. |
Travels to Spain - ROE17
Mike Mutters reports: In June 2023 we had planned to travel to Segovia in Spain with the RREC in our (well travelled) ’26 20hp RR Barker Tourer. Unfortunately we had last minute problems with the car so we took our ’26 30-98 instead in which we had just completed a short tour of the Bridgnorth area.
The trip was ferry from Portsmouth to San Sebastian then through parts of the Picos de Europa, staying at various Paradors (which are really excellent and very good value) and then worked our way down to Segovia via Valladolid.
The Spanish roads are superb whilst the side roads are usually in excellent condition (returning to the UK roads was like returning to a third world country) making driving a pleasure. The standard of driving (private and commercial trucks) tends to be considerate and we got lots of waves from vehicles passing by and those we overtook! The Vauxhall performed beautifully and was ideally suited to the mountain roads - the only problem being that I hate driving with the hood up but had to because of the sun beating down on us.
For sheer grunt and ability to climb long hills on autoroutes and similar, the Vauxhall is just the best possible vehicle to drive and both passenger and driver get all the glory!

OE202 & ROE9
Tim Jones: That was a good way to celebrate the end of A levels and University. Climbed the 5 peaks of UK and Ireland (Scafell, Ben Nevis, Slieve Donard, Carrauntoohil, Snowdon) over 4 days. 1700 miles, 5 sea crossings, 2 bivvies. Huge thanks to Yvonne and Les Murray, Heather and Andy Johnson for raising our spirits and drying our stuff mid way. OE202 is taking us to Périgord now for a rest.
